Flooring Choices

So many flooring choices! Not just in types, where you have:

  • Carpet
  • Tile
  • Linoleum
  • Wood
  • Strange materials like cork, concrete, marble, stone, etc.

But look at the options for each of those! You have a wide range of quality, colors, and patterns for each flooring type. Really, it boggles the mind–definitely boggles MY mind, anyway.

Well, for our house, carpet is not an option. Since I have a very strong allergy to dust mites and house dust, taking carpet out of the picture will help cut down on those allergens. Here’s a color coded floor plan with where we think different flooring choices will go. For the tile in the entryway and kitchen, we’ll need something that coordinates with the wood flooring in the great room. And ditto for the tile in the master bathroom. We thought it might be nice to have a different tile in the secondary bedroom area, but still not sure what we want to do there. In the media room, if we don’t want carpet, the acoustics might be off. However, I was just reading an article about using cork–which sounded interesting. Although apparently not as sound absorbent as wood flooring, according to the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC). Did you know there are pages devoted to that kind of info? :/ Me either! Though cork sounds interesting for the wine nook too–especially if you drop something, should be somewhat shock absorbent. There are some pretty cork tiles out there. See this Houzz article for details (have I mentioned that Houzz is both amazing and an awful time suck?). http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1293102/list/Cork-Flooring-101–Warm-Up-to-a-Natural-Wonder

Also, great use of cork tiles in a wine cellar.
